This is a dedicated discussion space for Professor Renzi's ENG 353 course during Fall 2011. We will blog as a way to practice analytical reading and writing, as well as to continue our discussions this semester beyond the confines of our class meetings.

Miss Marple
Miss Marple seems to be a very different kind of spinster. She takes on all the characteristics of a spinster in that she is alone , unmarried, and old. However, she has this knowledge base and power to solve all the mysteries that are presented to her. Miss Marple is able to notice certain details that nobody else seems to catch on to. For example in “The Blood Stained Pavement” Miss Marple notices that the couple hung up three bathing suits to dry after their trip to the cave. Then she explains that the blood dripped from the bathing suit onto the pavement. Miss Marple simply explains “sitting here with one’s knitting, one just sees the facts.”( 67) This sentence definitely plays on the spinster qualities of Miss Marple; however, she also is able to identify the facts that no one else can. Miss Marple is exceedingly cunning and witty unlike many of the other spinsters we have encountered in our readings.
