Melanctha

The prose of Melanctha becomes more dense as the story goes on. When I said that I felt like the characters were being tokenized, it was the wrong term. I was thinking that they were more like caricatures, and the prose gives a very dramatic effect to the story. The commas break up the text in a very emphatic way, and the story seems to be composed more of lines than of actual sentences. "Always now Jeff had to go so much faster than was real with his feeling. Yet always Jeff Knew now he had a right, strong feeling. Always Jeff was wondering, it was Melanctha he was doubting, in the loving." The comma placement after "doubting" strikes me as so strange, and it creates such an awkward emphasis on "in the loving." The same comma is used a few lines down when Melanctha speaks, "Yes Jeff, sure, you know it, always," and always Jeff felt a doubt now, in her loving.
