This is a dedicated discussion space for Professor Renzi's ENG 353 course during Fall 2011. We will blog as a way to practice analytical reading and writing, as well as to continue our discussions this semester beyond the confines of our class meetings.

Lolly
Despite having a small income of her own, Laura decided to move in with Henry and Caroline. She allows herself to become dependent on Henry (which we find out to be not such a good idea later in the book). She does not seem entirely happy, but she is content with this kind of life. She is so content that she rejects Henry and Caroline's attempts to get her married. She seems content, but perhaps, is she not?

After reading the rest of the book I think we can all definitely say that she was not/is not content with her life. She decides to move away from all of her family and basically live a life of solitude. Then she seems to be content with her life...until Titus comes to visit and ruins her happiness which in itself is an entirely new topic.
I read your post after completing the whole book and have decided that Laura was not content with her life. I think that she tried to do things that she would enjoy and then someone would mess them up for her. Kind of like when she moved to Great Mop and then her nephew followed and it sort of ruined it for her. She was fine living with her brother and his wife and then they had to go try getting her married off. I find it interesting that people always assume they are helping her or keeping her company but it isn't the case in Laura's mind.
I would say that Laura is not content with her life. She depends upon people yet wants to have her own independence so she is indecisive and thus creating no content in her life. She also says that she is unhappy and even in the beginning of part 2 when she discusses fall she says she becomes depressed and wants to be back at the countryside where she feels she was the most content. I also found it funny that though people are helping her by limiting her choices etc. that they think they are helping her yet all that they are doing is driving her more and more away from what she wants.
