Melanctha tells her own story

I am convinced that the story of Melanctha was written by Melanctha. A better way to say this is that the story drops several hints that it should be read as though Melanctha is the one who has written all of it. One example I offer for this is the case of Rose. Melanctha's character is angry with Rose at the end of the story because Rose tells her not to come around anymore. If we assume for a minute that Melanctha is indeed the one who penned the story, then she would be quite upset at the beginning of her writing. No wonder she calls Rose stupid and sullen. When we are introduced for the second time toward the end of the novel, Melanctha is kinder in her description. She is still not happy with Rose, but perhaps time has healed some of her wounds (I propose that Melanctha wrote this story over an extended period of time). Another instance of evidence of Melanctha as the writer is the preoccupation with color. Melanctha, being half black and a half white, surely would feel as though she is searching for a home between two cultures kept separate. To help her identify herself, she fixates on other people's skin color to use them as yardsticks with which to measure herself. Other examples are the uni-vocal way the story is written--even when quotations are involved--and Melanctha is never portrayed as the bad guy, and always excuses are made for her actions. If any of you have not finished reading the story yet, I urge to try to read it while bearing in mind the possibility that the character of Melanctha is intended to be the author.

I got this sense too. It seems as though it is written by her. However, I also got the feeling in the middle of the story that there was a gap. For a while the story seemed to be more about the thoughts of Dr. Campbell. It focus on his many back and forth thoughts about Melanctha and her past. For instance the whole thing when he writes her a letter saying he doesn't want to talk to her anymore...and for like a page and a half its all about him and what he is doing, leaving the reader wondering about what Melanctha's reaction was to the letter and what she was doing after. The few pages involving their relationship seemed more about him and his perspective (to me at least). But then after that it went back to her thoughts and telling the story from her perspective.
