Helga Crane

"There was so something else, some other more ruthless force, a quality within herself, which wa frustrating her, had always frustrated her, kept her from getting things she had wanted, still wanted" (Larsen, 10).

I found this quote especially interesting because we have just come off of our reading of Melenthca. Right away after I read this passage it reminded me of Melenthca and the issue that she had in the last story of 'wandering.' This related well to her quest for knowledge, because it is apparent that Helga is still searching for something that she wants. Whatever it is that she wants, it is clear that she does not find it in the first twelve chapters of the book because inshe moves from place to place so frequently, then eventually getting as fed up with her surrounding as she was in Naxos. It will be interesting to see what it is that Helga really is searching for in the last part of this story.

I totally agree with you. The quote and a lot of the narrative leads me to believe that she's not telling the entire story and she herself isn't sure about what she really wants. She doesn't truly know who she is and her adventures are similar to those of Melanctha's "wandering" to find knowledge.

This also reminds me of Melanctha for the repitition. When she says "was frustrating her, had always frustrated her, kept her from getting things she had wanted, still wanted" I remember the different times in Melanctha that she would repeat things or we would see similar sentences throughout the narrative.
