Criminals,Idiots, Women and Minors

This read was really interesting that kept me wondering what would happen. I cannot tell what the time frame was, or when this was written. The author kept writing about how this happened recently, yet women's rights movements were occurring long ago. One line that I found particularly moving was " The law which has robbed her so straight forwardly" (on page 12 of the read) because it shows that women during this time were not treated with the respect they deserved. It was apparent to both the author, and to the 'visitor' that was explained in the beginning of the read, who was appalled that women were treated so poorly. One other thing that shocked me was that although marriage was considered to be a man's job to do all for the woman when it came to providing, there were many instances where women brought home the income, yet men had the right to all of the money. Also it was strange that some women were starved to death by their husbands, who were supposed to be doing the best they can to provide for their wives. The main argument about how common law was not just really truly was convincing to me.

Hey Jen,

Glad you found this article so compelling. Just FYI, it was first published by Cobbe in 1868-1869. So you're right that this was written long ago (though women's rights movements are still very much going on today!).

Hope this helps you put this in perspective.

Best,
Dr. Renzi
